Other Activities at Shakawa

Remember its not just you that needs to acclimatise to South Africa, weapons too will require checking and re zeroing before you go out to hunt in earnest. The long trip, temperature ranges and general bumps and bangs which weapons receive en route means that a relaxing hour or so spent at the range will give you the confidence that you and your rifle or bow are on the mark.

Day Trips
Given advance notice we are happy to arrange trips for you or your non-hunting guests.

The Northern Province comprises a host of places for you to explore, including: Tshipise – Various very special attractions await the visitor. Thohoyandou – The commercial centre for the Venda community offers a rare experience of Africa, where cultural values are still strong and bond people together to create this delightful town.

Mapungubwe (Venetia Mine) – Along the Limpopo River stands the ruins of the Mapungubwe people. This site is one of the richest archaeological sites in Africa. Researchers say it was the first capital of the ancient kingdom of Great Zimbabwe. Excavations in the 1930’s uncovered a royal graveyard which included a number of golden artefacts among them 3 golden rhino’s, a sceptre and an assortment of gold jewellery. Gold and ivory apparently formed the basis of the transformation of early societies from rank based groups (such as the Zulu nation) to class based societies where distinctions were based on wealth and a sacred leadership. The emerging class distinctions are reflected in the Mapungubwe’s settlement.

Polokwane formerly known as the Pietersburg Area Bakone Malapa Open Air Museum – For insights into an ancient lifestyle, look no further than this traditional North Sotho Kraal, 9km south of Polokwane. Here, men and women practice traditional skills such as basket making, clay pots, furniture and utensils, preparing hides and brewing beer. Conducted tours are offered. Civic Plaza and Square – Lovely landscaped gardens with walkways, streams and ponds provide the perfect setting for Polokwane`s Civic Plaza. The Art Museum in the Library Gardens, houses an impressive art collection. A bandstand dating from the 1920’s stands on the south western corner of the square. The restored Dutch Reformed Church houses the Hugh Exton Collection, which comprises 22,000 glass negatives and many photographs of great historical value.
